starter motor/flywheel problems.

Post by drumnut182 »

Anyone had their Flywheel hitting the starter motor casing before...just had mine shatter the ali casing on the starter motor (out of the blue!)...havent taken off the gearbox to have a look yet....but have replaced starter with new one done up nice and tight and (altho it hasnt shattered it yet) tried it again and same thing....new clutch new (2nd hand) gearbox...all seems fine when i turn flywheel manually with new starter in but when i go to start it it crunches the casing...i know it mite be a knackered flywheel (even tho it all seems ok) but just wanted to find out if anyone has had same prob before i investigate. Engine fine when its bumped and is pulling good with no other noise indicative of a loose flywheel, it only happens when i go to start it....was thinking of grinding off the casing a bit on the starter so it doesnt hit it but even if that does the trick i still dont know why it would happen outa the blue AND with a new starter motor....these things are usually highly precise. Im certain nothing has fallen into the timing inspection hole altho that could be a possability i suppose....any ideas.

yeh it ws fine for a while (months) then suddenly this! Its was rubbing on the side of the ali cone and then it shattered...so something mustav moved out of position somewhere...or the cone (cover) that is on the starter end is faulty and slightly too large...my main question was "has anyone had this before" which was to find some info before i had to take off the gearbox but it seems so far that no one has....im going to take a slither off the ali housing and see if that does it i think...
Thanks for help and ideas though...
Anyones thoughts appreciated...
