Respray shop recommendations

Post by bellacops »

Hello all. Can anyone give any advice on a respray. Our '85 LeisureDrive is starting to look a little rusty at the seams and the sliding door has a hole in it at the bottom caused by rust. We've just had service/new brakes and are thinking about a respray for the summer.
I've seen some posts here that say it can be done for under £1k and have seen others that say it can be upwards of £2k. Can anyone make a recommendation of a respray shop in London/Kent/Suffolk/Sussex that will do a good job for a reasonable price?
Thanks :D

hello bellacops I would think if you go outside the home counties then below a £1000 is a possibility.
However, Have you tried your yellow pages and look for a commercial van/truck refinishing company.
These guys are contract sprayers that have all the equipment for spraying large vehicles.
Generally they wont weld or fit new panels, but offer a very high quality and lots of experience
or a commercial van/truck accident repair specialist is worth a look

find them and take the bus round for a quote...I wouldn't ask for one on the phone as an appraisal is often based on a visual inspection.

I did this and had a top respray by some very experienced fellas for £850

Getting rid of the rust so it syatys at bay for a good while is the important, and time-consuming part. That is where the money comes in. A cheap "blow-over" job will be false economy unless you`re selling it, and the potential buyer doesn`t know what they`re looking at.

The paint is just paint. It`s what is underneath the paint that counts.
Keep it real.

Thanks for the advice guys. Not thinking of selling anytime soon as we have too much fun in the summer :D it's just that shes looking a little tired after winter. I don't mind paying the going rate for a good job and totally agree that the rust is what needs sorting out. Roll on the good weather...

respray

Post by bulldog »

Some sound advice from Westy.Club.Joker there! I'm just in the process of having me van resprayed in its original colour by a company in Horsham, West Sussex. The amount of prep work that's gone into it has amazed me? Four days stripping it down, rubbing down, shot basting, filling and more rubbing down it just went on and on. Its primed up now which took all of half an hour four coats, next I'm told is more rubbing down (wet and dry) then the top coat. Hopefully getting her back soon so I'll let you know the total cost and what the qualities like (which only time will tell)? Pic's available of the process they went through? :D

Thanks bulldog I would be interested to hear your experiences with the spray shop and what the final cost is. I am more than happy to travel down to Sussex if the cost and finish are good (it sounds like they are doing a thorough job).
Cheers, :D

respray

Post by bulldog »

Hi bellacops

This seems a long time coming BUT I got me van back and very happy with the job for the price. It gets quite complicated now?

Paint 195.00
Bumpers front and back 108.50
Odds and sods & guidance 200.00
Sprayer. Done a deal cash in hand?

I did four days of donkey work rubbing down etc, using the spray shops equipment.
For the cash in hand? I got bloody good advice & pi$$ taking (re-do that etc). The final wet & dry rub down and all spraying was done by the sprayer.

I was informed that the respray would have cost £1500.00
That's with them doing all the striping down etc.

Hope this helps

P.S. photos available?
