it's just occured to me that i can use the piston ring to check bore wear!.

Yup, that's what I did with my 1.9TD... it occurred to me too, after getting debatable readings with a bore gauge (a lot of falafalling about)

However, you will need a new set of rings...

I wrote some of my ring gap figures down somewhere, think I can rememebr where they are, so till I dig them out, from memory, about 0.7 ~ 0.8 mm gap , one cylinder somewhat more than the others (No.3 or 4 maybe)

i stuck the ring in the top of the bore[and on some carbon!] still measured 1.6mm!, it's got quite a lip on it. i put a straight edge down the bore ,quite telling i could see the wear pattern[this is on the thurst side].
i've sent off for quotes for reconn engines[and what will the carrige be? both ways].

Yup, that does sound alot more worn then mine, barely a lip on mine, but told when I had it quickly cross-hatch honed, that they a bit oval, and it did have a few small scores, up and down in one or two bores. Seems to have bedded in and have good compressions now though, after 2500 miles.

Europallet maybe cheapest? AndyS had an exchange a while back, complete new short-engine AAZ... about £1300? Not sure exactly. Is the head fairly free from serious cracks?

Sounds like in Spain, would be best to organise it through anyone other than a Spanish dealer.

Then, do any of the SEATs have AAZ's in them, and what do Spanish scrapyards charge for an engine?

it was doing about 500miles before the oil got to the lower mark on the dipstick, a lot of third gear though[all the hills].a friend paid 500euros for a na deisel[small french van]300 to have it fitted including odds and sods.
the head has cracks in the normal places,it's got a dip in the middle,was blowing between 3+4,may need light milling?.
i'm still finding my way around[who to avoid using ect].i'm waiting for the guy who supplied the 500 euro engine to contact me.
the engine that i end up with has to be very reliable as we are going to africa in september!.

I guess E500 is OK if there's some sort of guarantee that it's a good runner... and hasn't 150,000 on it. Not a real bargain though!

You can grind/polsih out the cracks between the valves a bit (my VEGE head was slitting saw cut (10" dia. sh)there, to relieve the material)

would replacing the piston rings without honeing and crosshatching be a very bad idea?. how long would it take for the rings to bed in?.
it's very hot here[28c] i got stung by a wasp[on a finger]on friday and my hand's swolen up [i'm taking antihistamines].

Best to at least give a quick hone to break down any lacquer, polish etc

I think I ran mine in by the 300 mile mark, maybe less...

a local mecanic has quoted me 1000euros to fit an engine [from a brakers],new cam belt oil and air filters+oil.vege quoted e1994+vat and e135 for carrige.
what to do?.

replying to my own posts! . i had a talk with Elitevw who is going give me a few suppliers addresses,says as the bottom end is ok, to replace all the bearings and get a replacement head[if needed] +plus rings and gaskets.
i have wanted to re-build an engine for years!,the last one i did was in 1966[ a 1933 749cc austin 7 saloon called sarah].

But the bottom end is not Ok, with a step like that in the bore, IMHO

well i'm wavering a bit,going to clean the carbon from the bore top and mesure from there!.
