This has never happened before!!

Post by VWCamperfan »

Just finished work, jumped in van, started her and drove off. Got a few yards and started to loose power. Picked up again and carried on for a few more yards and same thing again. This happened about 6 or 7 times. Parked up to clock out and it stalled. Jumped back in, tried to start her and engine just turned over as usual but didnt fire up. Have checked and dont have an ignition spark. Have joined together the 2 connectors on the idle stabiliser, still no spark. Dizzy is turning so go mechanical stuff operating. When i disconnect the 2 connectors that usually go into the idle unit and reconnect them again, it fires up for about half a second then dies again. I dont think its these connections but was wondering if it could be the distributor past its sell-by date. Its electronic ingition on a 1600 CT engine. Have also swapped over ignition module with no difference. Anyway, had to walk home, only a mile but didnt really want to after a long shift! Any ideas? :?

The way you described your initial problem suggests lack of fuel.

Have a look at your in-line filter, if it is not absolutely clean then that could be your problem.

Check the connections on the distributor are tight.

Cheers Tex, just going in to have a nose now. Seems, after having a look through some previous posts, some members have had a similiar problem and turned out to be the earth connection at the bottom of the dizzy. Was a bit dark last night when I finished, so should have a better view of things today!

Think the problem is distributor related. Replaced with a 009 one and it ran, even though the plug lead connections on top are 90 degrees further clockwise and it now runs like a bag of rusty marbles! Going to have a look at this dizzy but does anyone know where i can source another one if needed? The current on I am using is electronic ignition with vaccuum advance and retard, although I dont actually need the retard bit of it now!
Thanks in advance.

Found problem, yippee! Hall sensor in dizzy packed up, thay go down really quick according to a web site I was looking at... Coughing and spluttering for about 200 yds then it goes. Not much warning there then! Managed to get another one from beakers close to me and fit it in, alls well now!
