How do I remove the primary handbrake cable on my 1989 1.6TD, I've released it from the handbrake , poked it through the hole in the floor and removed the nut from t'other end but it won't come out. Seems like there is a clip to release somewhere above the fuel tank but can't get to it.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
there's a plastic grommet for the wire felexible bit of the cable to slide in which is clipped to the underside above the fuel tank, when I did mine I ended up dropping the tank as I couldn't get my hand in, found it was actually cable tied as well.
The job would be a lot easier with the fuel tank out the way but I was hoping not to have to do that, however, it maybe the only way.
How easy is it to drop the tank , can I leave everything attached and just lower it with a jack until I can get my hand in to release the cable clip?
There is indeed a clip above the tank that you cant get to with the tank in situ (thanks VW!) If you are replacing because you cant undo the threaded bar to gewt the t bar off (mine snapped) the you could get the theaded end off a new one welded on to the stub of the old one, it is the proverbial can of worms (some of them of the tin variety) once you take that tank off, which you may or may not want to address right now (rusty fuel tank, corroded brake lines, perrished tank grommets etc...)
I'm resigned to the fact that I've got to remove the fuel tank, and any nasties lying in wait will have to be dealt with....looks like I can write this weekend off.
