kthla,

Don't give up! As you live in York try this guy at www.bkheritage.co.uk His workshop is not far from Selby - but I think he's from York, if not he may know someone who can help. Might also be worth trying http://www.vwrelics.co.uk at Elvington - mainly bays & spilts - but you never know.

I'm going away on holiday tomorrow and will be back 7th August, if you need a hand PM me with your address and phone number - and I will come round when I get back if you want, as I only live in near Selby.

:) Thanks for replies and offers of help. I was having a bad day I think, I am not gonna let it beat me! I am going to replace the fuel filter and check out the fuel pump. Maybe get an electric one and by pass the pipes and filter from front to rear. Had tank out recently to replace sender unit and it was in quite good nick, no great amount of crap in bottom, I cleaned it out anyway. I'll look for idle stabilization unit in an hour or so. Might take you up on offer Joda, enjoy your hols, (better weather I hope!). Thanks Jason k as well, I'm in York, too far away for you I think! :)

Have a good 'un joda, hope I have it sorted by time you get back. (I WILL have it sorted!!!) Jasonk, still appreciate it. Anyway, I have looked and then looked again. Then I had another look. All I can find is a black plastic box with an opening lid with a couple of multi plugs inside. These each have several wires, maybe 7 or 8 in each. In front of this is the coil. Just in front of this is a small hole with a little light rust in a small round pattern. Looks like someone removed a small self tapper. Could this be where this stabilising unit used to be and someone already removed it. I can't see two wires connected together though. On my left hand carb I have a small rectangular box with one wire going into it. it's described as "idling entrichment" in my haynes manual. The only other by pass described things are a bypass cut off valve and a fuel cut off valve. I've just noticed that if the by pass idle cut off valve is fully screwed in it does not give a click when removing and refitting connection. If I loosen it several turns it does :? . Could this be the miracle I have been looking for? Any ideas? Worth buying one I suppose. Or can I blank hole off to try it?

Might have answered my own question by looking in manual. It appears the idle stabiliser unit is only fitted when electronic ignition is fitted. Am I right, if so that's why I cant find it!

Fabulous, ace, great, smashing, eureka, fantastic, wow, YES YES YES :D  :D  :D  . I LOVE MY VAN. after much frustration and THREE carb strip and cleans a blow job cured it (On the carbs with an airline!!!). Turned out be a bit of crap in float needle valve on left hand carb which I just happened to see the edge of. I had to break it up with a bristle off a wire brush to remove it in bits! Bit of poking around and a bit of compressed air sorted it. (I think its a hose breaking down, I'll replace the lot!). Now I need to reset timing 'cos I experimented with it
Seems the spitting back was similar to having a lean mixture on a standard carb set up. Thanks a million everyone for all your help and suggestions and offers of help. What a great site this is. 10/10 to everyone who replied except T3Lee who gets 11/10 for a correct diagnosis. By the way, anyone in York area with a problem who needs to borrow a spare coil or condensor as a trial and error job, I have them spare :D  :D . By the way again, did I tell you I was happy? :D  :D  :D

I had exactly the same problem about 2 weeks ago, turned out to be a blocked fuel filter but this lead to another problem... The fuel pump packed up as well! May have just been coincidence but strange nevertheless! Also check you have replaced ALL fuel filters. May sound stupid but I have got 2 on mine, one just outside the fuel tank underneath, and one in the engine bay... Just to be sure! :D

:D  :D Still happy, had a couple of pints of Murphy's to celebrate!!! Did timing (before the Murphys) and all seems great, best it's ever run since I bought it, but this time it's keeping on "keeping on"!
Yes, I will be changing filters... again. I intend to change all fuel lines and replace the filter(s). I intend, eventually, to try and buy one of those old glass fuel pumps like they had on the old Hillman's and suchlike, and do away with pump mechanism on it, leaving just the filter mechanism and a nice see through glass bowl. Then I'll know when I need to clean things out just by looking. :D. Just a thought, as the crap is usually heavy compared to liquid, I might just put a bit of extra pipe in and necessitate (big word, dodgy spelling maybe) an upward journey for the fuel so that any bits stay at the bottom of the piping. This should help to discourage big bits getting to the filter and/or carb. After my experience though, I will always regularly change filters using the best I can source (not necessarily always the most expensive!!!) :!: VWcampervan: Did you cosider an electric fuel pump? If you did was it a viable proposition? I thought about it but never went any further, glad you got sorted. Richnewton Happy days? Yeah great!! Never stop believing? I stopped smoking nearly 2 years ago due to heart problems, nearly started again during this!! (only kidding, never smoke again, had the warning!!). Frustration is worse than breaking down and getting a big bill! I knew the answer was staring me in the face but I was short sightedly looking at the obvious! This forum provided me with the contact lenses!!

:D Still on a high :D . Thanks for comments Rozzo. I really don't see the point of not sharing info. If people didn't I'd probably still be sat on the kerbside swearing. And I really hope my experience will help others to keep going. project for today is adapting a Toyota Yaris tow bar to fit on back of my van!!! Sadistic? Yes I must be. Still happy though :D
