check the title grumps keep up!

It's an age related thing, Bob. By the time Grumps was reading about the problem he would have forgotten what engine the thread was about!

no points on these motors!!!

unless you have the 009 Bosh distributor  ....BUT.they don't work well on the air cooled engines.....I had backfiring and allsorts.......put the "proper" distributor in and it was tons better. However, the 009 is the only one that JK sell, so you may well find one lurking in you Aircooled!!

Mine had a spiiting noise not so long back (2ltr Aircooled), turned out to be a small hole in one of rubber pipes which attach to the carbs. Could be worth checking - just need to listen for air been sucked in. This will change fuel/air mixture.

May also be worth cleaning your carbs out - did mine with a combination of red ex and carb cleaner. The only problem is the amount of smoke you get when doing this - doesn't last long though.
Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.

waht they said.....find a stock distributor! 009 is not the right set up for the air cooled engine!

When i first got mine i had the same problem ,stalling rough running etc,.
The problem on mine was thet the carbs needed a good clean out,i do this every now and then and it runs as sweet as can be now.
Worth looking at as well as checking for air leaks etc.

:? According to Haynes manual these 2.0 a/c engines were fitted with both types of distributor. Anyway, fitted coil, condensor, points, cecked settings etc etc. Started brilliantly, ran great for about half a mile then :( back to misfiring and holding back. Gonna try bypassing by pass valve and then if that don't work I'll try cleaning out carbs and fitting yet another fuel filter. After that I'm afraid I'll have to give up and pay a fortune at the local garage!

be careful where you take it, you really need an Aircooled specialist, how about steve @ gasure or simon at brickwerks? I'm sure either could sort it for you. Mine was running rough recently, turned out to be the fuel cut off switch on the left hand carb.

:( Yeah, I know it's a problem getting someone who knows what they're doing. Unfortunately I live in York area and I don't think I can get it much more than a mile or so from home before the problem becomes so bad that I can't drive it safely. :(

:( Can't find the idle stabilising unit on mine. Just thoroughly stripped and cleaned carbs. Lots of crap in bottom. Just thinking it might be an idea to get one of those single carb conversions, must be easier than arsing around with the present set up. are they available used and if so how much are they costing. are they a simple job to fit? A bit of a buggar I suppose, but if it cures my probs then it might be worth it! Still not sure if it's electrical or fuel problem, that's the annoying thing. Could even be valves sticking I suppose. Getting really p!$$8d off with it now.

:( Well... I am just wondering if it's time I gave up. I cannot get this thing running right. I think I will have to do the dreaded thing and sorn it and put a ford diesel in it. It is only a home converted tin top after all. But it is MY home converted tin top. Thinking of selling as well and getting something better, even if it means getting one of those modern thingies, you know, a Transit, or a CF, or a Fiat or summik to keep me going for now! Then I'll save the pennies and get back to a decent VW when I can afford it. What's it worth? Its tested while about May 2008, tax to Nov 2007. Very reasonable bodywork, Very good chassis (tester said it was best he'd seen for ages), interior mostly pine cladding with R&R bed, cupboards, 2 ring cooker and sink with elec tap. Dual charging. Sadly the 2.0 cu air cooled engine is causing nightmares! I will not con anyone, it is a problem as you can see from this thread. Anyone any idea what I could get for it. I will only sell to anybody who has read this thread and knows the extent of the problem. oh! It's got a crack in lower N/S screen as well. I was given an awning so I'll throw this in as well. Needs a bit of repair to zip. (I won't sell seperately so don't ask please, I was given it by a great couple so would not take advantage!). I'll even consider P/X if I can locate a running camper at a low price (Even a gutted one). Thanks for all help from you lot, I'll be back!!!

the idle stabilisation unit is the little thin oblong box on the lhs of the engine bay. it will have two plugs coming out of it. remove them and join together. i would check the fuel filter and possibly change it. to clean the jets on solexs you have to remove the carb. the jet can then be removed and cleaned.
it cant be much but remove that bloody dizzy cos they do not work properly on the cu motor. my haynes only shows one type for the cu.
if you had crap in carbs that suggests crap in fuel so change filter. the tanks are known for rotting on these things across the top where you cant see!!!!
by reinstating the stock ignition system you are narrowing down the fields of what can be wrong.
if your lost just get it to someone who understands these things. if your local i can pop around and have a peep!!!
good luck.
cheers jase
