HELP!!!! Jumpy/spluttery probs: worst on LPG, also on petrol

EXACTLY what I could do without - wedding on Saturday, off on Monday in the Van to France for 3 weeks on our holi-moon.

And th van's playing up

2litre air cooled, 60,000 real miles from new, new lutch recently, in VERY good nick - tend to run on LPG not petrol...

Get going about fine - no probs, then when I get onto motorway and start going a little faster it'll run fine most of the time then every so often do a splutter/misfire/cough/almost a backfire...

It's worse and more frequent on LPG, have switched to Petrol and better but even ten after a long run up M6 it was OK, turned off and it 'coughed' twice on petrol.

Have recently had (deep breath): whole exhaust changed (Heat exchangers, silencer inc. LPG probe, gaskets, tail pipe), full service - inc new plugs (single point bosch), new leads, new distributor and rotor arm, new air and oil filters (about 100 miles ago), oil change (though from Morris to bog standard 1-40w which wouldn't have been my choice but I forgot to specify morris 30 - worth changing back?).

So - any ideas? Had LPG serviced a year ago at Gasure kinda due but was hoping to leave till post wedding/holi-moon...

*Think* it's might be linked to heat - though first splutter was pretty soon after starting and getting going...

Oil? Coil? Something worse?

Gonna call Steve Shaw in the morning but not just an LPG issue, so ANY HELP in the form of suggestions/help/fixes/ideas/"ah don't worry" messages would be really really good!!!

Spoke to Steve Shaw a while and have ordered new roto arm, dissy cap and new leads - may try and swap it all or can keep 'em as spares. HOPEFULLY just a problem with the ignition magnified b LPG and the rotor arm is likliest candidate.

Gonna eyeball the sleeve welding of the exhaust probe.

Thinking of replacing the coil and getting a spare in - GSF gave me price of £35 for the 2l Aircooled coil!!! Seems HIGH... Anyone know the score there (double price of standard bosch blue coil) - or is the coil even likely to be part of the issue??

Try swapping your plug leads (one at a time) for known good ones ... you did keep them didn't you ?

If it was running fine before what have you changed ? Have they fitted the wrong plugs ? Have they fitted a restricted rotor arm ? The fact it does it on petrol AND LPG say's it's not a gas issue. LPG needs a better ignition source than petrol .. perhaps it's just a better indicator of an underlying fault.

The fact it's when it's hot (or under load ?) would make me question the coil ... has that been done ? Try swapping it for a known good one.

All the best ... I know how you feel we're away on Friday for ~ 3 weeks too and it's the last thing you need. (But at least it's happened while you were at home ... console yourself with that for now )

Have put in a HEFTY order with GSF for part numbers as recommended by Steve Shaw - so a new set of def proper leads, new coil, 2 new rotor arms (the proper longer one - that'll be irst thing I replace!) and new dissy cap. £73 inc VAT and postage but worth it for the zen calm factor - if nothing else they're all good spares to carry as standard.

Still - at least the BIG THINGS (clutch and exhaust) have now been done and the ignition I genuinely can do myself, without even caking it - roadside if necessary...

Have breathed out at last! May yet order plugs though - have WS7CC ones in at the moment...

Either should be OK - anyone know if the NGK equiv 'B6ES' is single point?

Do it .. they're only a fiver a set FFS. I always carry a spare set of gapped new plugs, cap, arm and an used set of known good leads.

Does sound like igniting the charge properly might be it, but presume all vac pipes checked ..

Not checked vac pipes - will print wiki item - thansk for the lead/link.

May adjust the LPG idle as it's quite high as well - the mixture is definately richer not lean.

Ah well - fingers x'd it's the ignition system as that's easiest!

Aye - will do.

She runs well on petrol - I tweaked the PLG idle a while ago (and now the marks rubbed off) def botom of the list of adjustments but may give it a 1/8 or 1/4 turn and see after doing everything else...

THanks all for the advice - much calmer now it sounds likley to be just ignition and rotor...

Nah - the van's def been 'our van' when it comes to travels - I think she just wants to throw a mini-wobbly before the big day and her first big trip cos she's a girl and is competing with my fiance in stressing me out
