Cab Floor Condition

I have a 1989 Kameo that I bought from my 77 year old neighbour about 4 months ago. I thought that I might put some sound proofing material on the cab floor.

What a pleasant surprise to find the floor in such good condition. I bought my first VW Camper in 1982. It was a 1967(final year) Split Screen, so it was only 15 years old and the cab floor and wheel arches were falling to pieces with rust. Over the years I have owned various other Splits, Bays, Beetles and Notch and Fast backs etc., all but 3 had quite serious rust problems in the floorpans.

This is my first T25, so it's all a bit new to me.. Have I just been lucky or are all T25s of this age and 98000 miles as good. I should imagine that the build quality must have improved dramatically over the years.

Under the rubber mats it was grubby, which I have cleaned off.

no not luck ...it's called zinc and sealer and the body was galvanised with zinc after a certain year ...can't remember when though ...might have been '85

My 1983 passenger side is like that, but have found rust and ponding of water on the driver's side.
Water seems to be dripping down from behind the heater cover, and can also be seen ponding on the bolts that hold the dash in place, near the bottom of the screen.
Can anyone suggest where it is coming in? Is it simply a new screen seal needed, or a life of frsutration and confusion. I do have a small rust area in one corner at the bottom of the screen seal , so that could be it.

I had an E-reg golf like that. Some mornings it would have about 3" of water in the footwells. When you accelerated it ran to the back but when you braked you got a soaking! Added to the smell of cabbage from wet carpet and having to mop the windscreen on a sunny day to get rid of the condensation. Get a friend with a hose and go all round. Windscreen, windows, door seals etc. Sounds obvious but if it fills up when you are stationary, it's water running down but if it gets wet when you are driving it might be harder to find. Good Luck!

Hello High Peaker,
we had a similar problem to you. Water started coming in on the driver side and into the footwell. We used some silicon sealant round the screen wash jets and that sorted it straight away.

Thanks for the tips everyone - though I thought the smell of cabbage was from the cooker!
From this and other threads, I think I will go for a new windscreen seal whilst tackling the rust spots around the edge, then look closely at the other hull penetrations: washer jets, aerial etc.
Hope the cat's good at catching windscreens when the pop out.
