Counting down the time has gone from months to weeks and now finally days / hours.
Leaving on Friday for three weeks in France on the glorious SW coast at lacanau-ocean and I cant wait. Van is almost loaded, new MOT, breakdown cover, emergency pack and a wash and polish (the van not me )
Going to try a new route this year and drive direct to Bordeaux then across to the site rather than using the Royan ferry like the last couple of years, hopefully should be around two hours quicker.
We are heading across in a few weeks ,so may see you , keep an eye open for a white high top with t'onion on the back .. cos france is only a small place init
By Saturday pm I will be set up and in the water surfing, with the first batch of beer in the fridge chilling for my return
But I will keep me eyes open for you all, in the village called France.
We're heading for Normandy in a couple of weeks, don't want to venture too far as this is our first trip abroad in the trusty van! (any advice welcome!) Really looking forward to it, if all goes well will go deeper into France next year (van's health permitting!). Is France gonna be full of T25's?
I'm heading Alp-ward in a month - and my 1.6d is trembling with exitement of getting out on the road, but I sense terrified of the mileage and inclines heading its way.
Only done it in me car in the past, and have been told the tolls could be much more expensive in the camper. Must have been approx £40-50 each way in the car - how much more will they charge?

Bizzarely (or not !) some tolls considered us to be a car and some a motorhome ... guess it depends what kinda day they've had (the difference was perhaps 10% > 20% more). The problem is that with a hi-top you have to use the manned stations so can't just chuck a couple of € in the net an pass off as a car through the automatic channels.
Thinking about it I bet it's a bu&&er if you're on your own in a RHD van !

When you drive up to a toll on the motorway in France, you will notice an infrared height gauge just before the ticket booth. It is normaly set a 2 metres height and any vehicule taller than that will be charged "categorie 2" toll. If you own a pop top like my westy, try a very slow approach to the toll, so that the detector registers the front of the van. It does work but not all the time. My west by the way is 2 metres 45 millimetres. In other words, 4 and a half centimetres too high at the "velux" point!!!!
I have sometimes politely argued the case with "a bit of a chat up that old lady in the booth" approach and got a lower fare rate!
Carefull about a punch in the face though!!!
