Will these fit?????If so what tyres do i need????

Post by mellowyellow »

Hi all,
I've just won these wheels from flea bay... :?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1

I've heard ML wheels fit, so i bought em. BUT i've only read about the older alloys been fit not the newer ones like these.

I think they'll need 10mm spacers and longer bolts, but haven't got a clue what tyres to fit

Any help on any of the above would be greatly appreciated :D

8J rims will need pretty wide tyres, 235 at least I reckon, which are a lot to fit in the front arches. Watch the tyre load rating as well.

Read the Wiki guide, bloke tells how to fit ML wheels.
Keep it real.

The guy on the listing says they had 225/60/17 tyres on em when they were on the Merc...
If this is the case would i still have clearence probs??? Or could i use the spacers i keep reading about on here?
I had a word at work with the parts guy, he said he can get me some
Dunlop tyres 225/50/17 with 95+ load rating for silly money.
Would these do the job????
Or is it time to relist the wheels back on fleabay
I've looked through wiki like you said Westy, but can only find the centre caps fitting for the ml wheels.
Thanks for your responce.

Whats the ET value of those wheels you have bought?

I fitted 16" ML's with 10mm spacers and longer studs.

Yeah i read your thread Kev, thats what made me go for em.
Looks like i've lucked out on this one..the ETis 52 i've just been told
I've just looked at wiki as i'm writing this and it does list the newer ML alloys on the list :?
Now i'm confused, and stressing as the wheels have just been dropped off at my bro's house and been paid for.
Is it possible to fit them ya think Kev??

Hi, I've just fitted these wheels to my van (see topic: "wheel advice"). The wheels will fit straight on without modification. However you will need:

longer bolts for the front (at least 43mm)
extended studs for the back (+1")

as for wheel spacers, I was struggling with clearance with 20mm spacers on the front, and you will need at least 10mm on the back, much more than this and the sliding door will catch.

I have fitted 225/45/17 xload tyres, as have other people that I have taken advice from, budget tyres will cost under £200 for the four new.

Good luck :)

Great news 3rustateers, i'll be able to sleep now tonight now
Did the 20mm spacers on the front do the trick in the end ???
What brand of tyre did you end up going with?? As i said in my post, the parts guy at work got me a price for 1 Dunlop tyre for £125
Think i'll need all the helpl i can get with this van, i've done projects before but only the usual Golf's and bikes. Nothing that i will be spending loads of time living in.
Thanks for your help :D

Take 3rustateers for instance where could you get that kind of advice?

If you are a perfectionist then you will spend and spend...I have, just check out total spent in the garage...thank goodness mrs Rev doesn't read it :D

Thanks Kev, i'll be asking loads of q's before i've done.
Your rite about the money thing too. Think i've spent roughly £300 on wood for the interior  Just due to the fact that when i built the cooker/fridge unit in marine ply i didn't like the look much.
So i purchased loads of real pine from my friend who makes wardrodes and stuff. The unit now looks ace but weighs the same as i do!!
By the time i've finishes i suppose i could have purchased a factory fitted camper, but as the Mrs say's "i'm never happy unless i'm working on summat".
Will be hearing from me soon Kev no doubt :D
P.s check out my garage, would like to hear your opinion on the pine unit... Good or bad?

With a bit of luck i'll be going to Vanfest. Just want to get the cooker/fridge unit and the bed fully sorted first. If not i may even come in the car, just to get some ideas from the other vans.
Cool paint and graphics on yours Kev by the way.

If I were you I would start with 20mm spacers on the front and see how you get on, its very much trial and error. I ended up with 25mm on the front in order to clear the suspension arm.

As for tyres, I have fitted Wanli, may not last as long as Dunlop but obviously much cheaper. It may be worth phoning round a bit as some tyre suppliers are more helpful than others.

With an ET52 offset I would go for 25mm spacers up front and 20mm at the back which gives just enough clearance for the door.

From personal experience the equivalent sized Porsche rim (8J, same ET52 offset) uses these size adapter/spacers with no real issues on a van so they should be the same.

Hope that helps.
