disconnected/broken wire

t25 d reg '86 1.9 petrol autosleeper hightop

hi, i have noticed that there is a disconnected wire going to my starter battery and was wondering what it might be.

the wire is black and goes into a blue plasic sleeve where it is supposed to connect to the battery.
if i connect it when the ignition is switched on i hear a click from under the seat ( some kind of switch /relay that is attached to the floor there, looks original to me but i am no expert )
if i connect it with the ignition off nothing happens as far as i can tell

as far as i can tell everything is working bar the sterio, also there is an old alarm system that doesnt work.

any idea what this might be ??

i have no idea what the wire is for, but the correct battery is a "065" although a "075" and a "085" will fit and be a tad better in overall capacity

Feed to the split charge relay, for charging your leisure batt I would think, the click is the relay going in whith ignition switched on (should only click in with the engine running though, so if it clicks with just the ignition switched on but engine NOT running I would think the relay is welded shut and needs changing, probably the reason that it`s been disconnected as it may drain the main starter battery as it is)

that makes sense - thanks, but the leisure battery does get charged when the engine is running ( and the wire disconnected ), does that mean it must be something else or could you still be right?

another quick Q,

can you actually get leisure batteries that fit into the compartment behind the seat ?. all the ones i have seen are too high.
is that why you all use normal starter batteries instead of leasure ones ??

Which side of the battery do you suspect the wire goes to??
+ve or -ve?

it goes to the negative. there are two wires connected to lugs on the main battery connector. one is going into a blue 'spade end ' connector and is still connected and the disconnected/broken one was going into a red spade end

Do you have a fridge? I have wires off my main battery that power the auto igniter on my fridge ie.the igniter that automatically clicks if the flame goes out.

Not easy to find leisure batteries that fit and they tend to be a bit pricey. Have a look here for useful info:

good thought but the auto ignitor still works.

i just realised that the other small wire has fallen off at some point in the last couple of days too !. this went to the same double spade end connector as the one that had already fallen off.

everything seems to work still ( that did before ) so i guess ill leave them both off and see how it goes? ive just fitted two new batteries too. fingers crossed it'll be ok.

there is a ( presumably ) after market alarm fitted that doesnt work ( in fact its wire has been cut off just below the dash )- maybe it kept going off.
im wondering if these wires were something to do with that.

My van has a wire that goes from the ignition switch circuit to the viscinity of the starter battery and it is also disconnected.

The diagram that I have for wiring the ZIG C F 8 panel shows the fridge relay wired from the ignition switch, so that the fridge is powered as soon as you switch on the ignition. However, it is much more sensible to wire the relay from the ignition light circuit as this powers the fridge only when enough electricity is being supplied from the alternator.

On my van, someone has rewired the relay to the ignition light and just left the old ignition switch wire doing nothing.

To be safe, check with a voltmeter exactly when the power is being fed to the fridge. (check at the fridge fuse if you can find it) If the power only comes on once the ignition light goes out then everything is as it should be, so insulate the redundant wire and leave it alone or remove it.

Quite true but thats the 12v power for the fridge not the igniter.The igniter must be wired to a permanent live else it wont work when the ignition is off.

My earlier post is about the 12volt wire(s) that could trigger the relay that provides 12volt power to the fridge.

I was not writing about the power to the igniter?

Does that clear things up?

ive checked both the ignitor ( for gas operation )
and the 12 volt operation and they both work.

i guess ill just wait till i notice something isnt working.
im slightly worried that it might be something to do with the charging of the leisure battery but the wires are quite thin and i would imagine a charging wire ought to be heavier duty than that. ( and i guess it would go from the positive terminal too ? )

finally worked it out and you were right ! - thanks

where would the best place to get a new relay ? is it normal to be fitted under the drivers seat ?
