Starter motor model

Post by Brooksie »

My starter motor has begun to be a bit slack in disengaging and it is old, I mean, it looks like it came from the titanic after several years underwater. I'm off on a long trip later this month and want to take one along as a spare. When looking for a new / replacement, which model am I looking for, as some seem to be listed under a host of different cars / models etc?

I'd recommend a starter-motor off a 1.9 petrol water-cooled van Brooksie for your 1.9 petrol water-cooled van! :)
Seriously though they probably are interchangeable with other starters in the T25 range and even other VWs and I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows for sure! So come on guys lets help this little guy out!

Mocki,

thought a/c was a different part number......

I put an ask out sometime back as I have a starter indoors....came up as an a/c one....

i may stand corrected there then, but just coz the part number is different dont mean the starter wont fit....

but 2.1 and 1.9 are interchangeable

From what I remember they all fit but yes the stud on the solanoid is different lengths. Some have a plastic spacer some do not they may have different amp ratings too.

Cheers all, I'll keep my eyes open. A friend pointed me in the direction of ebay 'breaking ' vehicles - a world of parts at your fingers. Many thanks :ok

I just fitted a new starter motor to my van.The old one packed up overnight, no warning.
The part number on it was useless because it had been re cored.
3 Starter motors later I sourced the right one at GSF.
Only way I found to make sure I got the right part was to take the old one off and match the new one up to it.
They may be interchangeable or something like folks say, but that wasnt my experience.
Most are sold on an "exchange" basis anyway so its probably best for you just to change it and fit a new one before your journey rather than taking a spare.
Lying underneath the van fitting it away from home in a puddle of water at the side of an A road probably isnt much fun either.
