1.6/1.9 diesel. Which is best?

Post by mattc »

I'm interested in finding out what MPG people are getting from their 1.6 and 1.9 diesels. I imagine the 1.6 is a bit underpowered, which might mean it's less economical than the 1.9. Is that the case, or is it all down to the way you drive?
cheers

Weve got a hi top 1.6td. The engines reconed, and has now covered about 3000miles. It will cruise at 75mph and about 3 and a half thousand revs. Dunno bout the fuel, perhaps 30mpg. Certainly quick enough, unlike some that seem 'painfully' slow if you know what i mean?

I guess it depends on how you drive it? But I imagine the 1.9 has to do less work to haul itself around?

I get 30mpg with mine. Yeh its under powered on acceleration/hills etc.
You gotta drive em like you love em and treat em gently coz they dont have much low down torque even with a turbo.

I get at least 45mpg from my 1.6d. But she is slow, yet I can live with it.

I have a 1.6 td and its a high top, just done 3000 miles round France and averaged 40 mpg, does slow down on some of the bigger hills but can live with that. usually cruise at 60-65 mph.

Yes Owen, but if you've a humungous hi-top then you've enough storage to spare  We had our's done 3 years ago (65 ltr terroidal tank) and although we lost 70% of our rear wardrobe it's 100% the best thing we've ever done with the van. You no longer even think how much it's going to cost you for your holiday travel.

Re the diesel options ... aren't you forgeting the 1.7na. or are you TRYING to forget the 1.7na :rofl

Only if you want to loose storage space in your van to accomodate a large gas tank

if you had a decent conversion, you would have enough storage......mines in a space you dont even have in a westfaliure

What - forget the 1.7d ?

An awesome engine - gave me 35-40 mpg and 170k miles that did before it blew up!

And no, before you ask i havent driven a petrol. And thats a good thing. I don't want to go fast up hills.
