2lt a/c gearbox probs

Post by jonnyshowbiz »

Hi Guys,

this van saga is hard work, anyway drove back from the airport the other night went to reverse the van in my street, no reverse gear.

Went out to start it yesterday wouldn't start, had a look around it, gave the solenoid a wack and away it went, I understand that these are built in to the starter so need a new one of those.

Once I got it running I couldn't get it to move! the gearstick had become the classic stick in a bucket, I got under it a gave the linkage a shove around but it wouldn't go into reverse.

Is this new gearbox and new starter motor time.

Hi,

should have a starter somewhere.....2lt a/c?

whats the cluch pedal like......floppy?

Get someone to help.....then get them to depress the clutch while you lie on the floor and look at the top of the gear box. There is a tall sticky up thing - the slave or master (can never remember which) cylinder for the clutch. Mine was hydraulic on a 1980. This cylinder operates the gear arm on the gear box. Its not huge, but I was told it should move an inch or more when the clutch is depressed. If it don't move, then you won't change gear, needs the clutch bleeding or new fluid putting in. If the arm moves, the hydraulic system is prob ok, but may still be clutch related. Sure someone much more knowledgeable will be along shortly!

Oh - can you move the gear stick with the engine off???? When my clutch needed bleeding I had to cut the engine every time I needed to chang gear. Was interesting doing the three point turn at the garage....

good luck

Hi jonnyshowbiz, I wonder if the plastic bits you describe are the two nylon type balls on the selector shaft at the side of the gear box. If they are this is what I did to check that this was actually the problem (about 6 months ago) and I have left well alone because all is fine now.:
1) Remove bracket with balls on (mark positions first)
2) Clamp bracket in a vice and turn balls so that the "flats" on them are turned 90 degrees, thereby getting a non worn part on the mating face of the bracket.
3) Use a small drill and make a hole through the balls and the pin they are attached to
4)Put a split pin through the holes to hold the balls in position.
5) Re-assemble.
I did not grease up and still had difficulty but after giving everything a really good clean up and lots of grease I now have a brilliant (for a VW) gear change. If you try it take care not to grip balls too hard (makes yer eyes water!)
Make sure you mark positions of everything before you start, makes life a lot easier when re-assembling. This should at least tell you if it's a selector shaft problem, and if you are lucky, give you a long term repair.
Good Luck. :D

it is a selector problem, I need the pin that fits into a little plastic bit inside the gaitor at the gearbox end!
VW don't have one they are obsolete on the phone pretty much all morning yesterday no good!
