misfiring, cutting out, backfiring....

Post by uniB »

I'm getting quite familiar with this section of the forum I'm afraid. :(

Trying to drive back to Sheffield after Steve sorted out my worn CV joint and then I start getting a loss of power, misfiring all over the place, it won't idle, it just cuts out and the only way to get it stumbling along again is to give it loads of revs. When doing about 60is, if I take the foot of the accelerator and then accelerate again there is a slight backfire (can you have a slight backfire?).

So here I am, stuck in Wales!

Does it sound like crap in the carb? The fuel was quite low but there is a filter from the tank. Any other suggestions?

It has had a flat spot when you first set off in first until the revs build up, not sure if that was the start of the problem?

Haven't got a manual with me or anything, is the carb quite easy to strip down?

It's a 1.9 DG

The problem was that the carb had got crap in it (probably when the fuel tank had got quite empty).

To see if yours has the same problem take the air box off the top of the carb, get someone to start it up (if it won't tick over) and rev the engine while blocking the air inlet with your hand - should force any crap out of it - worked for me!
