the chrome insert in mine has lost it's chrome-ness in places and faded to a translucent brown type colour, orrible! but hasn't gone brittle, so . . was wondering about painting it black and refitting, not into the chrome look at all anyway, and certainly not willing to spend even 3quid a meter x 20mtr replacing it! just my opinion

Good enough?
Should be fine for a few years to be honest and I can't see the point in going through all the hassle to fit new trim if you're not replacing the rubbers too. Windows come out ok, but its still at least a days work to do the whole vehicle - make no mistake. For £6 for a can of spray - why bother. Takes 30 mins to mask up a window and 2 mins to spray it. Just clean round thoroughly first to remove any remnants of algae - bleachy solution will usually kill moss etc. Dry thoroughly before masking using tape and LOTS of newspaper to protect surrounding areas.
I'll tell you one thing - NO ONE has spotted they're actually sprayed and they glint in the sun like the real thing - if thats what you're after.
Mask up tight and if you get any light raggedness where paint has touched the rubber, run round with the edge with a small screwdriver 20 mins later and its as sharp as a button!
Another labour/cost saving tip from CovKid. Used to do this on beetles back in the early 80s. Slightly rough up the trim if you like, but generally they've already lost their surface and paint will stick no problem. You may find chrome paint around still but the really shiny one was outlawed I think as it contained cyanide?
