veg oil heating

Post by Ruby »

I am currently running 60%WVO to 40% diesel.
I have no mods at present but plan a heat exchanger (as per just veggin'), a (coolant) heated filter with 12v coil heater (for start up).I don't want to go down the two tank route and following a couple of dodgy cold starts recently, it struck me that there is a fair bit of fuel between the filter and injectors that won't get warmed. I have looked around but can find very little suitable, some heater mats from RS, pipe heaters (which are too big but could possibly be modified) or the age old bonfire!(Dad was a commercial vehicle fitter when it was 50% water and 50%candle wax)

So my question (eventually) is, does anyone here use heaters on their injector lines? If so what and where can I get some?
and here endeth the thread.

dodgy cold starts wont hurt(in the summer) as long as it starts. if your having real problems it might be your heater plugs. i have a lumpy minute each morning, but thats it, the rest of the day is fine :)

Sounds exactly like mine, I was just wondering about extra stress on pump and injectors with the starting but I have read a little about heating to increase atomising (or nebulizing). I figured that a little extra expense on top of the mods suggested above would help.

Thanks for the reassurance, I was a bit concerned I would have to start paying for fuel again......err I mean paying more for fuel again.

Alright guys,

I have just plucked up the courage to stat using veg oil. I stuck 18ltrs in testerday, srataight off Sainsburys shelf into a quarter tank of Diesel. Perfect! I than drove 160 miles without fault. I then stuck £10 of diesel in and another 18ltrs off Morrisons shelf! perfect. Slept in the van last night, cranked up this morning, started easy but a little fluffy for about 30 seconds then no probs. Have done another 160 miles today, now she is quite empty. Do I stick a bit more diesel in? or bang in 100% veg oil? I'm using clean stuff off the shelf. Does anyone know where it is cheapest as at the mo its costing me 58ppltr. What about WVO? I thought the animal fat had to be cleaned out of this? Also has anyone done a winter with pure veg and if so how did it start?

Cheers guys.
Mr Woodman

I've done a winter with pure veg - I need to test my heating system as I had a few crap start ups (and one none starter)

WVO requires setting up a mini factory to filter and clean the stuff - I've only ever used SVO. I get mine from Asian supermarkets in 20l metal cans, so I the container can be recycled too. Costs about £10.50 or so for 20 ltrs

What heating are you using?

I am looking at fitting a heat exchanger to the fuel line, induction heater to the injector lines and heating the filter (hopefully electric and water). If I change to SVO would a tank heater be needed as well?

go to scrappy and get heated filter head from pug/citroen or (as i am in process of doing ) make your own using the oil/water cooler you find on a JX or most vw diesels of that age above the oil filter .
