What just fell off!?!

Post by uniB »

I just noticed something hanging out the bottom van tonight, just in front of the near-side back wheel. Had a pull on it and it fell off (oo errr). Had a look round and I can't see anywhere obvious it might have come from. :?

So what the hell is it, anyone know?? And more importantly, do I need it?!?

I just started having a strange knocking noise that happened occasionally which sounded like something rubbing or catching, could this be responsible?

It's a rigid pipe, looks like it's had liquid in it.

I thought it looked a bit like a waste water pipe but that's on the other side and is still there. I was thinking that there may be a very small chance that when I was at Glastonbury last weekend I may have run over someone else's fallen off waste pipe which got lodged under my van?

Exhaust ducting - well, it is around that area, it does look like it's had water through it though.

No, it doesn't look like new water, it's old caked on water (or whatever fluid) particularly at the top where it looks like it used to join on to something else. I think it's plastic with a metal wire core spiraling round

I've a pipe something like that on my 1.9DG....

It starts off at the back right hand corner (when you're stood at the back of the van, facing the engine...) and is attached to the underside of a black box that then goes on to the air filter.

I think it picks up warm air from 'down below' near the exhaust and feeds it back into the air intake?

Anyway, mine fell off at the top and landed on a hot exhaust. People flashing their lights behind and I wondered why... I can confirm it is indeed plastic wrapped on a metal coil. :)

I can't detect any noticeable difference to the running of the van when it falls off, so it probably is only needed in sub-zero climates?

I just figured out where it came from, so it has once attached and not part of a washing machine or other persons waste pipe! - here....

that's looking from the front of the back wheel coming out of the bulkhead. It's got another pipe next to it that's the same. It looks like some sort of drainage pipe but what it's draining I have no idea!
