Central locking..

Post by Fox McIntyre »

Fitted aftermarket central locking to my van's cab doors the other day, fitted like a dream and works really well. I knew from looking previously that it seems impossible to aftermarket central lock the tailgate, plus I'm too lazy to make the wires go that far anyway. But, to my horror, I also found that it seems impossible to use the kit for the sliding door which was my main reason for fitting it. Has anyone modified the standard locking mechanism, or used a VW central locking mech with aftermarket solenoids, or, used the complete VW unit with an aftermarket kit, as in, wire the VW central locking motor to a kit? I'm using a 2 wire kit so its polarity switched.. Is the VW solenoid/motor operated the same way? (2 wires) otherwise I'm going to have to have the rod poking through my door card to flick the little black knob on the inside of the door up and down! Any help would be much appriciated. (I have Machine 7 W.I.D.E. contacts for the door BTW, before anyone says anything! :P)

Have a quick search mate, I described how to modify your sliding door lock to do this, also how to make the tailgate work, maybe 3 months ago?
Keep it real.

Oh, and you need to feed the power to it. Thats done via a sliding door contact plate (often seen on ebay). As you only need to lock/unlock when door is actually closed, power is transferred to the locking unit via this contact plate when its shut. Simple really:D

I welded a short tab with a hole in it to the bottom of that taper-shaped lever, the CL rod connects to that, gives it some leverage rather than pulling almost right against the pivot, works great.

I have put central locking on my t25, both the cab doors and the sliding door. I fitted Pins and plates which i got from the scrap yard (there on most tailgates) and then used the same central locking things i did for the cab doors. Hope that makes sence!

When i fitted central locking to my sliding door i fitted the spring loaded contact on the door but soon realised that there wasn't enough room on the frame for the other contacts. What i did as drill holes in the frame where i needed the contacts to be then inserted the most circular rawl plugs i could find and put round head screws in. If you do it right you get nice long contact points with the screw heads and they don't ground on the chassis. Then all you need to do is use female bullet connectors to connect to the sharp end of the screws through the access point on the front edge of the door pillar.

I used a pair of Caravelle door contacts (4 pins) they`re still listed at VW for around £15 each piece (ie you need both bits £30)

Are all 4 pins spring loaded on the VW one? I've got a second hand genuine contact plate but one of the springs (on the end) doesn't spring like the other 3. Is that how they are or is mine aged? I know they only ever used 3 of the contacts so it'll still work fine. Just wondered.
