Pierburg or Solex? Confused!

Post by badams »

Hi - are Pierburg and Solex one and the same? I need to get carb repair kits for the carbs on my Aircooled T25 (2 ltr) and as far as I know, they're Solex 34 PDSITs - says so in the Haynes manual and they have SOLEX written on them... but I've seen that other people have talked about Pierburg carbs in their vans of same vintage (1980) and engine size. Are the Pierburg 2E3 or whatever they're called effectively the same? I don't want to get the wrong kits...

oh, and does anyone know whether the kits from Just Kampers include all diaphragms and spindles, or am I better off going with the (more expensive) Solex kits from the Carburettor Hospital?

hope someone might be able to help. Sorry if this has been asked before (I couldn't find that it had, but it probably has!)
thanks, adam

Hi badams

The JK kit is not a full kit and GSF have stoped doing Carb repair kits for solex 34 twin's. The best kit I found was from Mega-Bug.

Not in the cat but got hold of them at Dubfreeze.

the solex weep as the spindles wear allowing an inconsistant mixture.
i sent my old ones (before changing to dellortos) to steve shaw at
www.gasure.co.uk for a full recon. which wasnt that expensive.
may be worth a nose.

thanks for the tips everyone! I did try Gower & Lee, and their kit was cheapest by a long chalk but the guy at Carburettor Hospital was adamant that his Solex kit was the business. still confused...

also... I think it's probably the spindle problem with mine as well (as JasonK says) but heard that the kits don't include spindles and that they were never a replaceable part. The guy who's rebuilding the carbs for me thinks he'll need them too, so how do you get hold of them? If Gasure rebuilt yours and they fixed the spindle problem, where did they get the spindles from I wonder?

hmmm...

I think gasure turn the existing spindle ends and then put an oversize bearing in, if I recall. Phone steve at gasure and he'll tell you
