fuel tank compatability

Could anyone tell me whether a gas & diesel tank are the same item? Also, woulda tank from a 1985 van fit an 81? Are there different tanks for older and newer vans? if so, when did the changes happen?

tanks changed around 84, diff dia filler neck hole, change from steel filler neck to plastic filler neck. if you wanna fit a later tank into an early van check what filler neck you have plastic or metal. if its plastic just grab a tank if its metal you will need the filler too as no one does early tanks anymore.
dunno if diesel tanks are different.

petrol and derv tanks are different, but you wouldnt tell, either will fit.......likewise a 2.1 tank is different to a 1.9 tank, but it makes no odds......
