Cold Stalling

Post by Poddington »

Reckon this could be typical of older engines but...

When the van is cold, its very juddery and stalls easily. When I put the accelerator down, nothing will happen for a few seconds then the acceleration will kick in, I end up revving a lot to set off which I'm sure isn't good for the clutch!

This lasts for about 5 minutes, is it normal or is something amiss?

Is it a good idea to rev it for a few minutes before setting off?

Van is a 2litre air cooled, 1982.

Any ideas very much appreciated.

I have a T25 and have been having problems with stalling whilst cold, as soon as you put on the clutch it started happening about a minute after it started and would last for maybe 5 - 15 miles depending on the weather. I changed the rubber carb flange (floppy and cracked), assumed it was due to the cracked exhaust manifold then last weekend for the first time I noticed that it no longer started shortly after it had been switched off eg at a petrol station, just turned over and over...

this weekend I timed it up, mainly by ear :D but it does seem alot better it starts okay when hot and didn't stall at the weekend driving to the tip, including stopping at junctions, I am sure it is much angrier and responsive too.

fingers crossed and touching wood it appears that perhaps this was the problem. it cannot be an exact science but it definetely appears to be idling much better and starts when hot.

We had this and had the carb serviced which has pretty much cured it.

More seemingly inept VW un/related questions/statements will follow in due course.

Changed plugs and set timing on mine to stop the cold stall.

(had wrong plugs in! were about 1/2 inch short on threads)
