OK so I am know thinking that a rear awning could be a possibility, but
My Autosleeper is a converted van with a lift up rear door on gas struts, unfortunately there is no access to the handle from the inside, so to open the door we would have to walk round and start again. Have the good people at VW supplied a handle to the lift up tailgate that can be operated from the inside, or if not has anyone got any ideas on a conversion to the original lock :?:

I saw a van with an inside pull to open rear hatch. Planning to put one on our van. I'll see if I can find with a little googleing.

rear lock

Post by mickymole »

hi i think if you remove the rear panel from the door and look at the mechanism you can attach a cable to the lock and feed it through the panel so it can be pulled inside the van.have a play with the lock and you should see which part needs to be pulled.

Sounds like what I read. They used a 1 1/2" key ring on end to pull on. I'm out of country at the moment, but plan to do this mod when I get back and will post up a thread with some pics and instructions when done.

O.K so this is what I am thinking about http://www.caranex.co.uk/
My thought is I can put this on the back door for the dogs and kit and then I would like to put a pull out awning on the side door for the "evening sitting out" :trunk
With the wonderful English weather it would be nice to have a dry outside area for sitting but still have the light made available from the side windows.
In my auto sleeper the drivers side windows are obscured when you lift the sink top and cooker and it gets pretty cave like in there, at least with an awning it can retracted.

I've fitted a similar pull thing to our back hatch so in the unlikely event of a fire in the kitchen area we could bale out of the back pronto.
We have a homemade rollout awning to relax under or to keep the rain off the side door/take your coat off and hang it up before getting in for a warming brew:

How does this catch work if you have locked the tailgate from the outside?
