NO FIRST OR SECOND GEAR ANY IDEAS?

Post by gazza »

1984 1.9 wbx 4-speed gearbox.
Managed to limp home in third and fourth gear because the first and second gears will not engage in fact there appears to be nothing there. No relevent information seems to be on the wiki would any one suggest a starting point from which a solution could be obtained? In other words does any one have any idea ow to fix the bugger! Thanks for your time hope the mighty 80-90 engine will spit owt a magic answer.

Is reverse ok to select and 3rd and 4th? If they select ok something has broken in the gearbox.

do you get third when you think it shouldd be first ? If so could be linkage, otherwise as Andy says could be big box problem, but usually it's an obstructed gate/shift problem Where in yorkshire ?

No reverse as well but as SHE WHO WILL BE OBEYED insists if you do it yourself you'll only make it worse so phone Adie at Alga garage and let him do it in the long run its cheaper.( Gawd bless her for her belief in my
abilities!)Do you know whats annoying I take the van that regular I'm almost a family friend in fact I have me own mug.Sometimes I wonder if its time to move on p'haps a younger van .

Hi ..your problem is exactly the scenario my last great breakdown/hassle/learning curve/enlightenment was(same engine and year)...funny thing that after being parked up for a week, it seemed to heal miraculously?!..drove it..lost gears again..1st,2nd and reverse..then clutch!!turns out whole clutch smashed..but check clutch hydraulic leaks first.could be just slave?..this isnt wisened advice by the way..its only cos it was me latest "episode!"

Hi,
can you select the gears with the engine off?

Mine went in a similar way....had to turn the engine off to get first and reverse jus to drive it down to the garage to have a ganders. Needed the clutch bleeding - that was all. No leaks that we could see, and having been bled, it worked brilliantly!

The way to tell.....have someone depress the clutch and see how far the little arm on the side of the slave cylinder on top of the gear box moves. I was told it had to move an inch or more. Mine wasn't moving much - bleeding rectified it.

Hope its a nice easy repair!

WORSE CASE SCENERIO

Post by gazza »

Once again thanx for your response but its the gearbox thats kaput and after tentertive enquiries the price of a replacement "reconditioned" if available is more than any normal working bloke should be willing to pay so will be placing a post in wanted for a "working"four speed gearbox for a 1984 1900 dg .
