swingaway style spare wheel carrier

my oppo is gonna make me a syncro spare wheel carrier , swing away sty-lee . i like the american site that puts the wheel in middle of tailgate so leaves enough room to have a gerry can.

he's a well experienced welder/fab-ber but we(he) has nothing to go on besides pics .although he can do it from this anything else would be helpful. anyone got one fitted that can give me measurements ? any other pics/schematics etc etc ? particuarly interested in how others have made side mounts/strengthening plates etc.

Where are you off to?.........Planning a big trip?

Have given this a little thought lately .......I think the tricky bit is the strengthening of the wing.

There is a lot of forces on it as you open it. wheel, jerry can & little child jumping on it at some stage!!

I would think the un-reinforced wing would definately twist!

last one he made for me was to carry 36" Simexs so got an inkling of an idea. Wanna do it once and wanna do it right ,hence asking about side mounts and strengthening plates!

I have an original vw spare tyre carrier. They are strong, I climb up and stand on mine to get to the hightop for cleaning, views etc. Part of it's strength is that the mounting catch locks onto the body forming a triangle of strength. It does not budge with my 14 stones. The tube onto which the spare tyre slides and then bolts has a cunning small hole drilled in it for a padlock to prevent removal of the spare tyre. Very well thought out.

I also have an original VW wheel carrier but some smart previous owner has extended it all the way across and mirrored it into a double wheel carrier. it works very well. Then across the double spare wheels there is a double bike carrier which is also great. The sixth tyre does make rotation of wheels easier. I would have posted a picture but my pc skills do not appear to stretch to that.

'kin ell! its like BY revisited on here! did croatia/slovenia/bosnia last year ( got thrown out of Bos twice though at gunpoint! ) gonna do same this year but for longer and poss Estonia later on in year or next spring if weather closes in too early. consdiering flying to Talinn and driving sumfink interesting back UAZ/GAZ or even a VW( cheap as a-holes out there) bros mrts is estonian so wont have probs on accomodation/language/getting ripped off

I have a genuine carrier on my 1.6TD and I have all the parts - bar two - for another one for my 2.1DJ. The secret is in the triangluation and the strengthening behind the hinges. You can be the best welder in the world but if you aint designed it right it will be useless. THe best way is to copy the style of the original VW one as closely as possible
