Gearbox

Post by J_BOGSVAN »

Hi All,

1.9DG with 4 speed g/box. When in gear at all speeds and under load there is a grating noise from what I think may be the g/box. When I dip the clutch and free wheel the noise disappears so I think that eliminates brakes or bearings but don't know if this takes drive shafts out of the equation. Hope I have explained this OK. Any ideas :?:

in neutral, with the engine idling, is it noisy with the clutch up? this is a sign of worn bearings/other internal gearbox parts,
if its noisy with the clutch down, you might be lucky and only have to replace the clutch thrust bearing, the grease dries out of em eventually and they rumble, you could try draining the g/box oil, and 'panning' for bits of bronze, gear teeth, mashed up roller bearings etc, in the oil, not a good sign.

No noise in neutral with clutch up and no noise either when down. Only under load. If you take your foot off the accelerator it goes away. :?

No, just that ignorance is sometimes bliss. Will have to save up some pennies to have it fixed ASAP
