Lpg questions..........

Post by Nighttrain1974 »

Sorry folks, this might take a while.......

1. What are the best spark plugs to use on a 1.9 dg engine which has been converted to run on lpg ?

2. What is the best (optimum) timing for the engine now ?

3. Anything else i should look out for ?

And if anyone has a nice picture or two on how to time these engines (static) it would be most appreciated.

Basically i have just bought an 83 leisuredrive conversion which has the lpg fitted and i just want to make sure everything in there runs fine before doing any major journeys.

Cheers

Darren

1. Bosch W7DC spark plugs with a reduced gap of 25 thou.

2. Standard timing but up to 5 degs advance can be used.

3. Make sure the air filter and air pathways are clean, no air heating should be used as LPG needs cold dense air to be optimum.

Timing cannot be done acturately static you will need a timing light and remove the vacuum from the distributor when setting.

Any links with decent piccies for the timing ?

Plus if i do advance the timing, is it still going to be alright on the petrol side of things ?

Cheers

Get a haynes manual...
if you need pics then you will need any other info thats in the book.. it isnt the ultimate but a lot cheaper than a bentley manual..

std timing is 5 deg BTDC and you can use a bit more on 95UL a total of 10 should be ok.. I run my "special" 2.1 DJ'd DG engine on 98UL and 10 deg..
Try and run on LPG as much as poss thats why its there..

Petrol ... what's that then :?:

Seriously though ... you're advised to run on petrol occasionally (IIRC monthly) to keep the petrol pump and fuel lines servicable, and to have liquid gold swilling round the tank stops it rusting (inside).

I actually put £20 in mine last night .... kin hurt it did though  Didn't take long either

Sorry if i sound like am idiot but this is the first time i've had anything that runs on lpg so i don't want to blow it up or anything stupid.

Anyway, i was advised to run the van on unleaded until the temps raise up to normal then switch to gas. Any truth in this or should i just try to run on lpg as much as poss ?

Cheers

No point what-so-ever, they can be a slightly 'lumpy' from dead cold for the first few 100 yards but that's all.

Right, so far i have replaced the rotor cap, arm and coil. Also i have repaired any leaks in the exhaust (there was one) and then sprayed the old wd40 at everywhere where there could be intake of air.

So far, nothing much has changed apart from she nows runs a little better on the normal unleaded.

I have on order some new plugs and leads and then that will be all the consumable electrics replaced. Also i have removed one spark plug in turn to see if the engine note changed and it does on each cylinder so i know i'm getting good spark at each one.

The only thing i can now put it down to is the dodgy NGK (euuuurrrgggghhhhh, had some in my beetle once and they were "pooh" !!) plugs and not being gapped right. They look fairly new so i'm thinking someone hasn't taken the time to do the job right.

Anyway i'm not going to fanny around with them as they're crap and see what happens with the new plugs and leads.

My question was is there anything else to look for ?
