 turns out the heater pipe has been rubbing on the boot and, you guessed it boot is frelled and coolant pipe has finally split chucking its precious cargo into the CV boot! so I got the leak sorted, now I am doing the CV thing, The balls and the inner dont look to bad no big pits just a very light scoring, but the balls can pass through the outer cage holes does this mean the outer cage is knackered?

as far as i remember when fitting my new cv's, if you twist the inner so its at quite an angle to the outer, the balls can come out, but i don't think they should be able to when inner and outer are flat to each other, unless very worn, you'd probably be able to feel a fair bit of play by holding the outer and trying to turn the inner back and forth if it was that bad tho.
