Automatic Gearbox strainer - bits inside...
Am doing a full service on my 1985 1.9 Auto Petrol Caravelle.
Have just removed gearbox sump and strainer to drain auto gearbox fluid. now it's all off i can see tiny metal fillings and what appears to be black bits in the strainer. The fluid a drainef was still bright red and seemed clean, no bits. Is this terminal...
not sure when the fluid was last changed.
Any help would be gratefully received!
Cheers
Rob

When i read your topic about problems with your auto box .You said the ATF fluid had leaked out so it must have been replaced with new as you discribe it as bright red.If you have not tested on the road you obvously still dont no if the autobox will hold and change gear without slipping.
Sorry i should have added that i have run it round the round, had her up to 50 and she sounds ok no knocking or over reving. I could feel her changing gear and when i came to the hill at the bottom of my road she went up it ok.

The filter in the autobox is there for that very reason to collected small particles from wear&tear.I dont think this box is terminal if its holding & changing gear without slipping its okay.Make sure you have it filled with dextron ATF fluid to the corect level the procedure is discribed in a haynes manual. And check the level & colour frequently .

I replaced the seal around the auto box, cost £16 From VW, plus about £12 for the dextronII, took about an hour without ramps, slowed the leaks by 95%
the other leak is fixable, not been brave enough to do it yet
thought I'd hate the auto box, but absolutly adore it...if its possible to adore a g'boz, .....................................................

When i collected the devon with the autobox the owner said it would not drive.I managed to get it to move in D1 i drove it from west London to Bookham in Surrey it changed gears but it slipped on hillls plus loads of problems trying to move from stationary. When i was about 2 miles from home there was nearly nothing left in pulling but slippage. On the drive in the morning there was a massive leak of auto fluid &gear oil from the diff under the van.I took off the sump and found parts of sheared metal the fluid was burnt dark brown. This is what you call a terminal autobox.I rang around for prices for a recon a local well gearbox rebulider quoted £1,700 for the box & £300 for fitting.I was able to obtain a good second hand one from a member of the club for about £80.00 and was very kindly delivered for only fuel cost.If you need to remove the autobox and replace it can be a bit tricky as its heavy at one end this makes it unbalanced .There is the torque convertor to consider this is the part that requires three bolt to fit on to a steel plate to the crankshaft end off the engine. The torque convertor requires carefull positioning on its splines when its reinstalled back into the autobox prior to bolting back on .I managed to get the replacement autobox fitted and working but needed to renew the diff and sump gaskets & new fluid and hypoid oil for the diff.

I think from the , err, wait for it, the bit that looks like the bottom bit of a mug with a wire clip holding it in place
apparantly, you ease it out with a driver, replace the seal, ( or use gasket sealant) and it should be fine........
Read this, get really paraniod, then think, feck it, it'll do till it breaks
thats what i did
