scenario.....van starts fine, can drive it about for ages, turn the ignition off,go into shop to buy something, turn the ignition on,drive bout 500 yards the van chugs cuts out then i have to leave it for an hour or so before it will start again.
carb been stripped n tuned, fuel pump was replaced in august last year.
want to go to biggar at the end of the month, but cannae risk havin to stop or a pint of milk or a pee.
your help and advice would be great.

Can I bring this back up please as my 1990, 1.9dj, 150k+m, , never rebuilt or tuned, never even spluttered or lost power etc until 2 days ago is Now doing Exactly the same with same simptoms note - rough idle on returning to start and then it drops out, seems if your lucky and blip the pedel it may just keep running... until you let it idle again, an only the brave or stupid would atempt driving at this time!
So far ive,
Replaced the fuel pump, replaced all the rubber lines, removed & flushed the tank, replaced the fuel filters, New plugs, Cleaned dist.
Find that when its cut out after 500yards (strangly close to a float chamber that distance?) if I pour a little fuel directly into carb and/or manually suck fuel up to the carb inlet it will start, maybe not 1st time mind, but when it does fire everythings A-OK, revs idles, drives etc etc, until you stop and leave it for said 1/2 hour, then same poo, diferent place!
? = Fuel solnoid, surely only with a Electric pump?, 1.9, retro fit?
Oh an it started after being parked VERY nose down with 1/4 tank, starting up after 3/4hr, driving down hill, bout 450yards an turning around then heh presto.. VAN FROM HELL, just as it booked for the MOT an im about to go to NZ for 4/6 wks on Monday!!

Well,
As the next logical step I now have a carb kit on order from local VW centre,
approx £20 including Vat, still listed on there system and in stock, sure ive seen them through other sellers at £30>£40 mark!!
Non in unitil wend an as Ill be out of the country by then guess the old boy will have to be put to grass until I get back, What a lovely thing to have waiting for me heh!
Please still suggest what this prob could be though, an guides& tips on stripping down a pierburg would be usefull.

If it's no one thing it's yer mother.....
THATS NOT FAIR, stamp stamp stamp, why wont my problem go away so easily????
Ha, such is life, fair play to you if its fixed though.
Maybe you guys can back me up a bit though, the local garage is convinced its a fuel tank prob, even though its been flushed clean, breathers & lines vacuum checked and blown clear & flexi bits replaced, and even filled full so no possibility of air sucking up feed line.
So... stop me if im wrong but how the hell can it be the tank? They think I should drive around running out of a can in the back for a while to prove it is or indeed is not.
Does look like fuel is draining out of the engine bay filter when its sat, thought about a non return at the tank but why should it suddenly need one now after 17 years??!
Thoughts please.
