Leaky fuel tank

Hi everyone

My poor old 1.7NA Vanagon has sprung a leak! There she was just sitting waiting for her gearbox and suddenly half a tank of diesel was soaking into the ground.

Upon further investigation I found that a small screw, with a piece of roofing felt as a washer, had been dislodged from a hole in the underside of the fuel tank. I was wondering is the hole a standard thing? What would be best to use to re-plug the hole? Should I use the same screw but with a better washer/ What would said washer be? - Neoprene?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Get a new tank would be my suggestion. If they are the same as a petrol get in touch with jock_sbfc on here I know he has a very good spare for sale.

I'm pretty sure VW did not design roofing felt into the tank, Nor did they design in any holes. Some bodger has probably used this fix to 'cure' a rust hole.
So, as the rest of the tank is probably 20 years old as well. I'd be looking for a new tank. (or at least a good second hand one)

Others will prattle on about fixing it, welding etc and I supose since you arent going any where till the gearbox is in, perhaps drop the tank and have a good look at the condition of the rest of it.

having just replaced the tank on my 1.6TD there is definitely no small hole on the bottom side. I'd just get a new one from GSF and fit it..........although its very fiddly
