Just changed the diesel fuel filter and now it wont work!

Post by ringo »

First of all i fitted new fule piped from the diesel filter to the injector. Then i changed the filter to a filter that only has the inlet connected (and bypassed the filter on the return).

I then left the van for three days with the return hose disconnected.

Today, i finally got a starter motor (which gave up on monday), so was able to kick the engine over and...

The van will only tick over. It wont rev. It smokes like hell.

I have filled the new filter with diesel and diesel comes out of the return pipe of the injector thing no problems.

However, the van will only tick over and wont rev.

What have i done ? Got air in the injector pipes ?

Thanks in advance

don't think its air in the injector pipes as once you go that side of the pump you're at the high pressure side and it would be pushed through.
more likely to be an airlock in the new filter i would have thought.
you have got it piped the right way round have you? (they usually have arrows that point in from the tank and out to the pump.) if its the wrong way round you could get froth being pulled through instead of neat fuel.

Thanks dude - the fuel filter was connected correctly - however:

MUPPET ALERT: When reassembling diesel fuel system, ensure that you select the correct bolt to go in the correct banjo at the diesel pump. They are different. One has a big hole (the inlet) and one has a small hole (the outlet). Doh.

It works now
