1990 (G) 1.9dg running on gas with oil leak
The oil is forming a small patch just below the engine support bar on which the engine rests.
Headley has had a look, and reckons that the oil pump gasket is the culprit, which has been purchased at vast expense from the dealership. (seems there are two gaskets, one at84p the other 36p)
Now the chap that is gonna do the work, plus the first place I approached for the gasket said that the usual culprit for oil leak in this area is the oil pressure switch. So, thinking that its better to be safe than sorry, I took the plunge and committed to the pressure switch as well. But, seems there are two....a white one and a brown one.
So which one, he asks. I have no idea, I reply.....go have a look he says....wipe it with a cloth.....but its deep underneath......so I have bought them both.......
Now, my question is - the chappie could simply replace like for like....but what if some previous owner has put in the wrong one. The pressures are stamped on the bottom of them.....where do I find out definitively which one I need? Could go chassis number.....but what if the engine has been changed?
I am told that if you put the wrong one in, the light could come on unnecessarily, or not when it should.
All advice greatfully recieved!

I think there are 4 differant ones
anyway , take the old one out clean it up , it could be the gasket that has failed on it , then either replace like for like or just the gasket ,thinking about it ,i think they seal with a copper washer .. loooking in the bentley its a 0.9 bar one thats fitted

Mark - thanks for that.
will look to see which is the 0.9 bar!
the new ones do have a washer with them - think it is copper but not deffo sure as they are in the van at the mo.
Was told that it was the plastic that fails.
If the pump gasket is nice and clean....it won't get changed on the principle of "if it aint broke, don't fix it!!"
thanks

I had an oil leak that pooled on the cross member. Also fine spray on engine bay side walls.
It turned out to be caused by the crank case vent pipe being blocked. Oil was being pushed past the crankshaft oil seal by the crank case pressure.

Tony,
thanks for the info.....but the bods who know have said that the crank case seal is dry!!! So don't think it is that.
Mark - thanks for the research.......looks like replace like with like and offer up a small prayer!
