Okey dokey. I searched for the info and in the end satisfied myself I'd found a winner. But, it seems to be missing the mount that takes the slidy bracket on a 2l CU engine. It only mentioned later W/C engines in the description, but as it was never meant for my motor, thought it was down to the catologue they used etc. How do the alternators mount on wasserboxers? I can't see the single top bolt having enough rigidity to take the tension on the alt belt.
Ebay linky
Or do I make a frankenstein out of the 2?

Well ring him up then, he's heard of Transporters pre 1990, that's got to be a good start.
As far as I can ssee there are two mountings for VW alts. One has the two holes directly oposing each other across the alt and one has both mounting on one side. I have seen one Alternator with three holes that would fit anything I supose.
Idealy you need an ebayer that has taken the pic showing both holes so you can compare it to your old one.
There may be other ways to mount an alternator on a VW engine but those are the ones I've seen.

The original on mine had 3 equally spaced mount points (in a trianlge?). Maybe a later engine has a slightly different slidy adjuster plate that mounts onto the further away hole. The mounting system uses the 2 mounts nearest the engine, top and left looking at from the back of the bus. The remaining threaded mount is just for the fan housing mount. I tried clocking it, but some mounts were threaded/not threaded.

More charging
It is possible to swap the mounting bit of the alternator. I've tried a few and some I've managed and some I didn't. I was trying to do the same thing as you - fit a 90amper on my CU lump to charge the batts more quickly. I gave up on a 90 and settled for a new "65 amp" that actually puts out 71 - the shop showed me the output on his test rig.
If you're good with bearing pullers and the like it may be possible to swap them successfully.
