Another split charge question (on Komet).

Where you go, where you stay and everything to do with getting there and back.

Another split charge question (on Komet).

Post by andyhagerty »

Hi

Just replaced secondary battery as old one shot. Whilst checking got 12.6v on secondary batt. 12.8v on main batt. Ran engine. 13.7v on main batt, but still 12.6v on secondary batt.

Hooked up to mains via zig unit. Got 13.3v on secondary batt.

The blue relay by the main batt is operating.

Is this right?

Andy

Alternator isn`t charging the aux, battery. Voltage on both batterys should jump up with the engine running. Sounds like a split-charge fault, either a knacked split-charge relay or a wiring fault, there should be a fuse in the system somewhere, close to the battery usually so may just be that.
Not well up on your `van, but the Westy fuse is inline and close to the leisure batt under the drivers seat.
Keep it real.

If this is the same as my westy, the split charge relay is mounted just infront of the aux battery, towards center of the van, the relay is a very unusual 5pin unit but can be replaced by a standard 30/40amp 4pin spotlamp relay by piggy backing the two pin 47 wires (note* this relay is not the more common 5 pin which switches between 47 and 47a terminals) both pin 47's are common (joined) and two terminals are used to make attaching these two heavy wires easier.
It should be possible to actually hear this relay click when the engine is started or at least feel the relay work but obviously the voltage at the battery should instantly rise to just under 14volts from a fully charged 12.6V
