MOT time next week.

Post by Horney »

Hi Guys,

The van is going in for it's MOT next week and I'm after some advice as it's the first MOT I'll be putting it through since I enetered T3 ownership. I know it'll fail on the exhaust and I have a replacement but what else are common failure points? How do I check these problem items for MOT worthyness?

Cheers dudes/dudettes,

Nick

I dunno, but I can highly recommend a garage in Hereford. Didn't even do an emissions check. Not a single advisory despite blatently fooked bushes.

don't think T25's are any more troublesome to get throught the motty than any other vehicle really, i'd rather have mine failed on something which would affect my safety, than take it somewhere that passed a van with dodgy bushes and didn't check emissions tho. makes you wonder what else they overlooked

at the end of the day, your paying these Sun reading spanner monkeys good money to check that your vehicle is safe, it makes you laugh that the wording on an MOT basically says ' this is not proof that the vehicle is in roadworthy condition' !! What the blithering heck have i just given you the best part of 50 quid for then ? ? [sorry, rant over]

mate, there is no difference between a t25 mot or any other form of car/van. if you think its gonna fail with the exhaust, change it  if the lights dont work, fix em.

I have a new exhaust and I will of course check all lights etc, I was more after common problems that aren't easily spotted like ball joints and bushes etc that I can check before taking it in. I'm used to minis and they quite often fail on top ball joints so before I drop eithe rmine or the wife's in I will check those and re shim if required. I'm not too clued up on the T3 and I'm not sure of these kind of things to check. I'd rathe rit passed first time then me having to take it back because something I could have fixed beforehand wasn't done.

things to look out for pre mot

Post by boatlesspaul »

i'm doing the list of odd jobs for my mot but the first thing i thought of is to waxolyl the break pipes, check for rust around suspension mounts i,m racking my brain, have a look for wear on disks and drums, otherwise i struggle to think of anything else.

the mot tester wont examine disk/drum wear, it goes on a rolling road brake tester if your brakes are weak it fails. the mot is only a rudimentary test, things like bearings or bulges on your tyres, corroded brake lines, rust in structural areas are a more than likely fail. make sure the handbrake is good, lights all work ok etc etc

Discs can fail on wear/pitting/scored

Well I did all my checks and fitted the new exhaust. The only thing I found was two of my tyres are badly cracked on the sidewalls (THey went flat while it was off the road with a slow puncture). I have boot polished them that has hidden the cracks pretty well. Hopefully MOT man wont notice as I can't get any tyres fitted before it goes in, I do have some on order though!

Heres some pics of my new exhaust, sounds and looks smashing!

That's the Empi one on JK isn't it? I've got one waiting to be fitted but reading some of the moans on the brickyard I might just send the bugger back. Failing that, I'd want to see at least 12 months out of it and if it starts to look fooked in that 12 months, it'll also be going back!
I'm also a bit dubious about putting that kind of weight on the heat exchangers alone. Might fashion some kind of brack to support some of the weight but haven't had a proper look yet.

I can't wait for the sound tho......

(12 months time I'll bite the bullet and get a full blue bird system.)

I put mine through a pre-mot a couple of weeks before its due up that way if any problems arise i can get it sorted and if they say its ok they can't really fail it when the real mot comes round because it was supposed to have been checked over the garage i use never even charged me last time just told me to change me front indicators
Techtrot25 the pissead formaly known a Stef998 back in the wallet draining world of t25 ownership

"boot polished the cracks out" bloody splended talk, i like your thinking. try to take it to a place that if it fails first time, you can take it back in 7 days or 14 days the retest is free, like the one i use FREE PRE MOT :P
