Another intermitant oil light

Post by Hacksawbob »

symptoms: oil light coming on increasingly bright approaching 3K RPM. If I use indicators, elecy windows, or wipers light goes out whilst in use and back on after. Doesn't always do it every trip but if happening stays happening for that journey. Engine running OK. Oil level is ok.
Just an electrical fault?
When the oil light comes on for real does it come on gradually or is it just a case of fully on or fully off?
Also have Alternator light on as well (dodgy alternator) but a good 13V is going to the battery. Any ideas?

Full on or off, this looks (and sounds?) like an earthing or lecy problem of some sort, at one end of the van or the other... deliberately being vague as

Hopefully someone else will give you a very good clue asap

There are two, what are called high and low pressure, the normal higher pressure one (.9 bar) is in a really awkward spot somewhere down between the water pump and pulley area. The low one (.3 bar) is under the nearside cylinder head, measuring the supply pressure to the top end oilways.. they work in harmony (allegedly) connected in series ? ... one is open circuit and one closed circuit by default and the circuit continuity checked against a 2000 rpm break-point. The way its wired, one is being tested above that speed and the other below it. We need an accurate description for the Wiki so will try to find one...

The wires come in from the front nearside corner of engine bay... your problem may well simply be bad contacts at the instrument cluster, the multi-ribbon connector may have corroded a bit - careful around there, take out ribbon, clean and refit, test etc.

Great explanation here...

Ben's place, always a good place to start...

... and end. One of the best resources on the web for us.

For instance, I know it's the oil pressure not the DOPS on my diesel Doka as :-

a) Both high and low can come on and they do seem to work together just as the DOPS system is meant to, and do this logically after a fast run.
b) I've measured idle pressure when hot (< .9 bar for diesel)

HHHMMMM no I didn't, got two lights on the dash now, I'll just let the coolant run down and go for the hatrick eh! do you know what chapter/page?
Ihave taken off dask and scothbrited the connectors I'll see if it happens again.
Also found when I disconect the 2 sensors at the juction point in the engine bay, at idle (low rev/low oil pressure sensor) light doesn't come on, but when I rev to over 2k (hi rev/ low oil pressure) the light comes on dimly AND the buzzer comes on (but the buzzer doesn't happen whilst driving)
