daft question m8 but you have fitted the seal the right way round haven't you? they're only designed to seal in one direction i think? (not that i've seen the volky one but generally oil seals only seal in the right direction)
hope you sort it soon cos it must be annoying

The seal was from stateside tuning and he said it was a VW origional.

I put the seal in th same way as the old came out.... guts facing inside so the flat face was flush with the enine.

As for double lipped, I'm not sure but i don't think so. do you have a picture to compare it with?

Oops!

We all know about this other option, but seem to have forget to say 'it isn't the input shaft seal is it?'

Its always the smell that tells!

Don't forget to loosen the oil level/filler plug while box is out, and refill to just below it afterwards

try screwing a coarse self-tapping screw
into it and used that to pull it out.

Yeh, they can be awkward, keep screwing it up and pick it out in bits, though a self-tapper and an 1/8" drill does sound like a good idea :)

Splashed out on a tool, £4.50!

5 sec and out :)

All back together. will try later. been around the block and reversed it on the drive and no oil. new seal was much tighter.

Clutch is juddering in reverse now though. :( been cleaned of oil once to often i think. Not putting a new one in till i'm sure its sealed!

Where is cheap for clutch plates, quick look at JK and looks to be near 60 quid!!! only need the plate th whole setup it nearly new :(

If its oil on the disc it will sort itself with use. It could also be be distorted from not aligning disc properly or engine and gearbox mis aligned hanging on the clutch.

Just noticed this thread.. if we're talking about the flywheel end crankshaft seal, then accroding to GoWesty a lot of the pattern seals are too shallow to seal properly, they reckon only original VW ones will do.. see:

The Vanagon Flywheel ("rear main seal") Story
Syncrosport (taking a break as of summer 2024)

Its nearly always worth paying slightly more for geniune vw parts and just pay the once.
