Wheels and Tyres

I'm looking at getting a set of Granada 15" X 6" steel wheels for the van so I have more choice of tyres. I understand the ET, centre bore and PCD are correct to fit the van... I was just wondering if I'll need longer studs and bolts or will they be ok as is (my vans got the 6J wheels on at the moment).

I've done some searches on here and read the posts I could find about tyres etc. I've had a look at Sowden tyres website and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go wih the 215/75R15 Colway 4 X 4 AT's, which from what I read shouldn't give me any clearance issues on a standard 14" van? Just wondered if anyone else was running these and how they get on with them onroad (road noise) and offroad (grip, etc)? Unfortunately I can't afford to run two sets of wheels and tyres so it's going to have to be a compromise for me... these look like a fairly good bet.

I run Colway AT's on mine

road noise isn't something I've 'noticed' so it can't be too bad. I'd say they are no louder than the commercial spec tyres I've had on previous vans

on road I've never felt like I've over stretched the grip (and mine is / was a pretty a heavy camper)

off road in dry / slightly damp conditions they are ok

off road in wet / claggy - muddy conditions they clog very quickly and when that happens your going nowhere

when mine wear out I'm buying MT's

I am thinking of going a similar route to Womboy and had spotted these same tyres. Andy you say 'when these wear out' - how long have you been running the? Any estimate of overall tyre life?

Womboy speaks of Granada rims. Which model/year would that be from? I have also seen mention of Mercedes C class rims. Is there anything to choose between them? Is one stronger than the other or perhaps more easily available.

Andy you say 'when these wear out' - how long have you been running the? Any estimate of overall tyre life?

I've had mine since on van since May 05

Looking at MOT's I did touch under 13, 000 kms 05 - 06, then about 8,000 06 - present day

Van's away at brickyard at minute so can't get an accurate mileage or remaining tread depth for you just yet, cept to say there's plenty of beef still on them

I dont think the centre bore on steel granada wheels is big enough, but someone will come along and agree/disagree with me soon. Alloy wheel centres can be machined out but not pressed steel ones. Use merc c class thats what most people do.

I had alloys off an old Granada Scorpion and had the centres and the studs bored. I have now got 15 7j steel merc rims for off road and 15 7j alloy merc rims for on road (pentas). I am using Goodyear Wranglers ATRs (on road) Good in all conditions except extreme as this was proved at Coney Farm. Ultimately BFG is the tyre which I would have gone for but they are on the pricey side so I now have to run 2 sets.

15" Merc Steel wheels look exactly the same as the VW 14" steel wheels so keeps the van looking 'original'.

I have BF Mud Terrains on a set of 15" Merc Steel wheels. Good off road and relatively well behaved and quiet on Tarmac.

Ok, if the Granada wheels aren't going to fit, then it looks like I'll be going with C-class wheels

. Am I likely to notice any problems with gearing, etc, with the tyre size I mentioned above?

I've been using the tyre size calculator on the brick-yard to mess around with some different sizes. The closest I could seem to get to original size was with the 205/75R15 which gave a difference of +0.58%.

I couldn't seem to find any decent tyres at a reasonable price for the original wheels. They seem to be mostly M+S tyres and fairly expensive. Does anyone run the original wheels with decent offroad tyres and how much did they set you back?

I run 5.5X15 EMPI 5s with 205/70R15 Yokohama Geolandar AT2. I don't do any serious off-roading but the Yokos seem to cope with wet muddy campsites as if they were dry tarmac

They are also very quiet and very grippy on the road.

I run 225/70/15 Continentals on ARC 7 x 15 Alloys and the gearing is no problem. In fact I get an improvement in fuel consumption, cruising speed and extra ground clearence. Have a look in my garage to see what they look like.

The Granadas will fit if you get the centres bored out slightly, doesn't take long with the right equipment, had mine done by a local blacksmith who does other type of metal works too.

Hi, wot is the offset and pcd of syncro wheels? Are they Audi/Merc fitment of 5/112?

The offset on my 6" wide steel wheels is ET30. Stud pattern is 5x112. Not sure what the offset of the 5.5" wheels is... ET39? Someone else will be able to tell you that.
