To answer your question. Yes an oil leak can be fixed.
I am not 100% sure about your engine but I believe you just need to drop the gearbox (my girlfriend did our last time so that gives you some idea of how hard the job is) remove the flywheel and pop the seal out. I dont think you need to split the motor - others will confirm.
As for driving with an oil leak. - I'd kill you ! the reason I ride a motorbike.

well my uncle has had a look at daves van this morning and took it down for its mot, and it passed! Apparantly the oil leak wasn't that bad at all!
wierd how it can fail at one place and then pass at another.... mind you i suppose part of it is down to opinion....
my uncle reckons its probably best just to keep topping it up and run it till it dies...
