C.O. Emmisions on L.P.G.

Post by wasserleaker »

just read in the free magazine that the R.A.C. send out that running on L.P.G. emits 10% less carbon dioxide emissions than an 'ordinary' car,
thats loads more than i thought, i thought it produced loads less CO2 on L.P.G., more like 40% less than petrol. is it the other 'badness' that is emitted like hydrocarbons where gas is much cleaner, does anyone know ? ?

LPG emits similar CO2 to diesel less than petrol. It is much cleaner than diesel in terms of NOx and particulates.

The LPG Association website says vehicles running on LPG emit about 20% less CO2.

Also:
Compared with diesel, one diesel car is equivalent to 20 LPG cars with regard to NOx, and 120 LPG vehicles with regard to particulates.
Diesel emits substantially more fine particles than LPG.

BP's website says that "NOx emissions show autogas to emit up to half that of petrol and one-tenth that of diesel with even greater reductions in urban use. ....autogas produces 43 times less emissions than diesel on a cold start and 247 times less emissions than diesel on a hot start.
Ozone precursors emissions (VOC) are 60% less than from petrol vehicles.

It's definitely cleaner. One of the best illustrations (if you are a camper) is to observe how clean a gas stove runs compared to a petrol stove. The latter covers itself in soot endlessly and needs constant cleaning, whereas a gas stove needs virtually no cleaning (unless you spill something on it... )

Thanks Trundler, for taking the time to write all that!
the gas stove comparison makes sense now you mention it.
all that and it's cheaper as well :)
