Can anyone help?

Post by D4LTattoo »

Engine(1.9DG) starts but won't idle,if I press the gas the engine dips and more often than not it cuts out.

Problem seemed to occur on the last trip I made in it.

I'm not mechanically minded but I noticed a lead on end of which doesnt appear to be connected to anything, can anyone tell me what it is and whether or not its likely to be the cause of the problem.

Sorry about the quality/pics being on myspace, i'll get them on photobucket or similar ASAP

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That something to do with the timing set up, and shouldn't be connected. :D

Probably not the cause of your problem. :(

Fuel blockage (pump/filter) maybe..
But check those vac hoses from air box, to distributor vac unit first, manifold for air-leaks etc..

When was the engine last serviced, plugs, rotor-arm check etc..?

If it fluffs just as you hit the throttle and trys to die (usually just as you are trying to nip out of a junction) sounds just like the vac advance unit on the distributor is buggered.. or even disconected. suck on the tube from it if you can keep sucking, you need a new one, if it doesnt make sure all the connections are good (it goes to the back side of the carb).

Could even be the accelerator pump on the carb is not working properly but would most likely be smelling of petrol..

the lead you see is for diagnostic kit and should be cliped to the back of the alternator.. dont worry about it..

Mine did that.
It was an air leak at the vacuum hose and an air leak at the base of the carb.
Get it idling, spray around the carb and the vacuum hose area with brake cleaner, if the idle picks up and sonds more healthy, there is the leak!
Worked for me.
New hose, new paper gasket for carb mounting, adjsuted timing and mixture, goes like a T25 now.
Same engine as yours.

Gave the Carb a clean and added some fuel treatment to the petrol tank... appears to have done the trick... fingers crossed :)
