gearbox rumble

Post by Ray »

I have a small gearbox rumble on tickover when hot. Its always been there since I had the van. I thought it was a engine mains rumble but as I have changed engine twice its still there. I spoke to david at shiplake and he is going to listen to it at stonor hopefully, he seems to think it is a small bearing somewhere - can't remember now - but he said it sounds the same as members gearbox he doing from scotland? Ian Anyway is this a sudden failure or will it go on for ages?

The prop does ring but this noise on tickover and in neutral. I must get round listening when the clutch is depressed, and also check the oil level.
Thanks for the reply - hope all are well in france

do you have a tdi conversion?
You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape; If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Nope, think Ray's got a waterboxer of some sort... if it stops when you depress the clutch, then that's mainshaft bearing of some sort I expect

Re-check oil level in box, if Ok, then pray.. agree that Aidan knows these noises in syncro boxes well. Think depends how loud it really is... at first signs of difficulty in changinmg, slow syncromesh - that'd be the time to stop and invetsigate more deeply... unless you're about to take a 5,000 mile journey. That's my take, not everyone's though

Doesn't stop on clutch depresssion so it seems not to be gearbox in fact it appears to come from oil pump area. checked water pump and alternator both new and ok. Does a recon engine come with a new oil pump? Anyway taking back to fitter tomorrow - maybe all boxers sound like this when warmed up?
