I've shifted the fuel filter to down at the tank. While I was doing it I noticed that the fuel return and feed are on the wrong sides of the tank according to the haynes manual ?

Fuel pump, push rod and new coil ordered. Carb getting a good clean on tuesday as well !

tank ontlet should be on the drivers side (rhd) and return on kerbside, you should only have one filter, small plastic see through one 3inches from tank outlet, no where else, and definitely NOT in the engine bay..... replace the petrol pipes as a matter of coarse , engine room fires kill vans, petrol pipe is cheap, don't join it in the engine room!

check the push rod for the fuel pump' they wear and end up too short to pump enough and the diaphram perishes.......

go back to basics: you've got a 1.9 dg. I don't knoe the carb but it might be a pierburg 2e2.
How do the spark plugs look? Get them out and clean them up or at least inspect them. Run it up to temperature and disconnect each ht lead one by one. Is there a partiular cylinder that's not firing well, note which one!? Put a timing ight on it. Is the timing right? If you've got a good spark to each cylinder amd each cylinder is firing ok then you might want to satrt looking at your carb. Don't assmue that the carb is the root of yor problrem
