Gearbox for 1.9TD

Post by Andyvandy »

Hi Folks

My van (1990 Westfalia Camper)has been converted from a 1.6 D to a 1.9TD.

It has a MK3 Golf 1.9TD engine.

As it is, it is under geared 3000 RPM at 60 MPH. I seem to remember when I drove my Ex's MK3 1.9 TD Golf it was running at 3000 RPM at around 70 MPH.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a suitable 5 speed gearbox that would be suitable for this conversion?

Thanks

Andy

Thanks for the info.

Maybe I'll stick with my original box for a while as it looks expensive!

I picked up a four speed box from a petrol for under a ton and swapped the bellhousings, iirc its a DU code, but plently to chose from that have a much lower final drive than the ones fitted to the na diesels. Revs are much more sensible than they were, cheaper than fitting a pair of taller tyres on the back too.
I'm guessing you already have a 5 speed box that's why you're looking to replace with another 5 speed one, 5 speed boxes seem to have high price tags, but if you got a four speed + the linkage it would fit.
lots of possibilites on simon baxter's handy list of gearboxes

This statement does not make sense...

1) 3000 at 60 is not 'under'-geared as these engines will rev to 4200 at least without any governor mods, some go a bit more... if anything that is over geared.

2) A Golf is not a T25, it has less wind resistance and less weight so of course will be geared higher, usually by more than the 70/60 ratio you're suggesting

What is it that is the problem, exactly ?
