I'm going to do some research on the regualtions that underpin the MOT. Don't ujs fail the test if the inherent protection for them i.e the greasy boot has failed? Surely that's a measure of checking against corrosion and decay

Only splitt boot on front outer driveshaft joints are fails others are advises.
Seen as you brought up seats, if the seat is removable (most people carriers) the seat belt is not a testable item.
andy, this is interesting stuff: seats aside (if you'll excuse the pun) and focussing on the ujs, why have I been failed (not advised) on inboards on both rear and fronts in the past? Is the detailed guidance given to testers such as yourself in the public domain and are you guys just intepreting it differrently and, if so, why?

Its testers making the rules up as they go. The book only mentions front outer and bolts holding on the inners but not the joints. Propshafts don't even get a mention in the book. If it is not listed as a reason for rejection its a pass.
