Fuel pump issue

Post by carl666 »

I have a 83 watercooled T25 and when I put her away last year she was running fine....
I've come to start her and get her ready for this years mot etc and she wouldn't start...after doing all the usual I have found the issue to be the fuel pump.
If I take the pump off the carb no fuel, if I disconnect the pump from the housing and pump it manually it works, put it back on no fuel.
Is this a pump problem or is it the actualor bar from the cam worn so it won't move the pump enough to move the fuel.
Whats messing with my head was it worked fine when we put her away last year then now nothing.

If it does end up being the pump has anyone got one for a 1983 watercooled motor or even the actualor bar if it ends up being that.

Need this sorting out fairly soon as need to get her MOT'ed (sun's here)...........Thanks in advance,

Carl. :D

gsf do this

18531 FUEL PUMP PUSH ROD-100mm T25 1.9 Water Cooled > 11/90 £4.50

If its what I think it is, it's cheap enough for a try.

I had the same problem, seemed to happen quite suddenly.
Just a theory but, it seemed that the pump worked under normal driving conditions i.e. higher revs, but if left for a while and the fuel in the carb evaporates; the pump struggles to fill the chamber under the cranking up on the starter motor. If I primed the float chamber with fuel it would work until the next time I didn't drive for a while.
I changed the push rod (they do wear down) which worked for a while before the pump packed up as well, despite working manually as you have noticed.
Might be worth changing the push rod first, as it is much cheaper than the pump itself.

BTW might be something to look out for? I bought a pump from VW but the inlet or outlet(?) was a larger dia than the original, although GSF supplied the correct type in the end.
It's unlucky to be superstitious....
