Loosing power and stalling

Post by mark206000 »

Having just had a nightmare getting van through mot it repays me by running like a big bag of poop

Had it out for it's first trip in the sun yesterday. Started fine, then after about 10 minutes it lost power and stalled. Started again after 5-10 minutes or so then done 30 miles no problems.

Parked it up for 2 hours then on way home it done the same thing. Only this time it kept doing it every few miles down the road, but started again quicker.

Looking forward to some weekend getaways this year. Done alot of work on it last year and didn't get to use it much hoping I could get it all sorted for a good summers camping this year.

Not going well, save my summer ! :P

Any ideas of what it could be ?

Mark

just a guess but we had a similar problem and giving the carb a good clean sorted it.

others may be able to help more but they will need more info on your engine.

How about electrics as well, when was the last time you put NEW HT leads on, spark plugs? Aprently they dont last for ever

but try fuel first

Redex has been mentioned and it works.

Good luck with it

Hi,

I'll try the redex out. New Dis cap, rotor, ht leads and plugs only last yr, maybe done 1500 miles since then, they need replaced already you think ?

The coil looks like it's been there a while, i'll maybe change that out, could it cause probs like this if it's dyin ?

Thanks for replies :D

Changed the fuel filter out, wasn't that dirty to begin with. Someone has moved it tho it's on the tank side up near the carb. I can see petrol getting sucked into it and when i disconnect the hose from the carb it's getting pumped out. Not a hard jet or big squirt but enough i would have thought - but I don't really know !

Had it running this morning no probs, but it's done this a fair few times before then runs fine for a little while :?

Taking the fun outta driving it, cause i'm always cra**in myself where it's gonna conk out next !

sounds like as kev says you might have an extra filter on it one of those you see through from an auto shop there should be one near the tank a solid one about 4" long £6-7 fifes or other motor factors these should be changed on major service.but try the redex you would not belive how bad mine was yours sounds very similar ok for a while then bam, completly cured in two weeks let me know if it works for you .maybe see you arround on our travels will look out for you.

could be worth a check on the vaccum diaphram on the dizzy! suck gently on the vac pipe and see if there is any resistance? if there is not this could foul up the vac advance and cause poor running!

Would say that the new parts you put on are ok then if they have only been on a little while. Secound filter sounds like it.

Please please dont put the fuel filter in the engine bay, if its a cheap £2 one then it may last for ages but its like a littler bomb in the engine bay. Sorry to thos who put it there but its not for me and so i let people know why.

If its the fuel pump, put a clear bit of pipe and go for a drive, see if its empty when you stop. just could help

Hope it gets goin again

Had a good look under the van and def no 2nd fuel filter under there. When I get a chance i'll move it to where it's supposed to be. The fuel line won't be long enough to reach the pump so i'll have to join another bit onto it, this ok to do ?

Been reading through some other post and some have said the coil, but noone had said if it has fixed it or not, so i'm gonna change it anyway.

Looking at gsf, but there's a load of them :?

92510 IGN.COIL-BOSCH BLUE 12V T25 1.9 60 BHP Water Cooled 8/82 > 7/84 £15.00
92511 IGN.COIL-BOSCH 12V(MEX) T25 1.9 60 BHP Water Cooled 8/82 > 7/84 £15.00
92523 IGN.COIL-TRANS.IGN.BOSCH T25 1.9 Water Cooled 7/84 > 7/87 £32.50

Van is 83 - which is my poison !? Or any recommended ones from somewhere else ?

I'll try that and some redex, if no better then i'll change the fuel pump out as well.

Cheers, Mark :D
