Diesel starter motors

Post by Louey »

My van is refusing to start :x

I went to to start it this morning and the starter/solenoid whirred even when I turned the ignition off and I had to rush and run to the back and disconnect the battery :?

I've check the connections and they are fine - on the solenoid there are the usual 2 threaded connectors, a spade connector, but also a small threaded connector - does this need to be connected up to somewhere (ASAIK it never has been)

Sounds like the solinoid and the contacts in the back are mucky,

Just spent the day cleaning a bedford van one today, just dirt over the copper. It looks really easy to get the motor of but the clutch lever is in the way. you will need to lever it out with a long screw driver.

take the plunger apart and then have a look at the copper.

Sorry its not much help. can get a new one for about £100 deliverd about the best i have found so i keep fixing it.

Hope this helps

Hi Louy
Just had my 1.6d motor pack up, got a new solenoid from our local auto leckys, £22 inc vat, whilst taking it off, noticed the braided wire from motor to solenoid was iffy so remade that connection as well.
motor now spins over perferctly.

Same as, cept for the scary still whirring thing.

Check all the wires and the earth strap have good conections at each end, unbolt and disconect to check for hidden muck.

Ask the breakers and spares horders if it needs a newun as I got a working example at a good price which seems quite the thing now.

All good!!

Solenoid has been replaced and they also had to replace the main shaft with the gear on that turns the flywheel - it was broken.

Started straight off - just hope it stays that way :D
